Section 4.8 Product Identification and Traceability

Objective:

To control and identify either castings, or materials supplied by material manufacturers.

Castings:

When received, castings will be stamped or painted with the drawing number and/or material number. After any machining which removes the identification number, the casting will be re-stamped or painted.

Bar stock:

When received the national standard material specification number will be stamped on both ends. If, or when cut the remaining end will be re-stamped.

Other:

Any material received that can not be stamped will be tagged with the national standard material specification number.

Responsibility:

Production: Production will be responsible for reviewing the receiving slip for bar stock and assuring the material is stamped. Castings will be visually inspected for the proper identification before machining and for stamping or identifying the casting after machining. When specified by customer request, specification and traceability requirements (heat numbers, serial numbers, grade, etc.) will be processed. Purchasing: All purchase orders for raw materials will include specifications of physical and/or chemical characteristics and properties which must be met. When necessary, purchase orders will specify provision of certificates and or test reports indicating compliance with specifications.
